I haven’t had a chance to read too many new comics this year, but Beautiful Darkness by Vehlmann & Kerascoet did stick in the mind with its combination of childrens book illustrations and dark, dark deeds.

Favourite movie of 2014 is a tossup between Edge of Tomorrow and Boyhood, though Koreeeda’s I Wish on DVD was excellent too.

And then there was the belated discovery of Adventure Time :p

The Shadow Hero gets more reviews!

Cory Doctorow at Boingboing says it’s “is a terrific story, full of the kinds of timeless dilemmas about responsibility, power, and duty that makes the superhero motif so enduring.

Rich Barret at Mental Floss lists it as one of the Most Interesting Comics of the week, and suggests it’s “probably the best superhero comic you will read this year.

Noah Berlatsky (The Hooded Utilitarian) at Salon writes that The Shadow Hero confronts its themes “with humor, insight and intelligence.

Harper Harris at Geekrex has been reviewing in the single issue releases and finds  “the Green Turtle to be my favorite new superhero in years. It’s wonderful to see these kinds of stories come out, and between Yang’s tight, clever scripting and Liew’s dynamic layouts and style, this one comes with very high recommendations!”

And Samantha Roehrig says “[t]his graphic novel is insanely powerful. The weaving of stories is creative and unique” over at Comics Bastards.

Last but surely not least: The Green Turtle pinup above is drawn by Dan (The Man!) Santat! And the one below by Steve “Whiteout” Lieber!

not quite like anything I’ve read before, but it adds much to the landscape of Asian superheroes and has elevated the Green Turtle to be my favorite new superhero in years.
